Background of the Study
Nigerian Pidgin is a dynamic and adaptive creole that serves as the lingua franca for urban youth in Nigeria, particularly in mobile text messaging. This communication medium demands conciseness and creativity, where pragmatic features such as abbreviations, emoticons, and code-switching are routinely employed to convey complex meanings within limited character spaces. Urban youth use these pragmatic markers to manage turn-taking, express politeness, and inject humor into their messages, thus maintaining social bonds despite the brevity of text exchanges (Ibrahim, 2023). Contextual cues—often implicit in mobile texts—play a pivotal role in shaping how messages are understood. These features help bridge cultural and generational gaps, enabling users to negotiate meaning effectively. However, rapid technological evolution and the emergence of new digital trends may challenge the preservation of traditional pragmatic nuances. This study examines the innovative strategies used by urban youth in Nigerian Pidgin mobile messaging, seeking to document and analyze the evolving pragmatic features that contribute to effective digital communication and cultural identity maintenance.

Statement of the Problem
Despite its widespread use, the pragmatic complexity of Nigerian Pidgin in mobile text messaging remains underexplored. Urban youth often face challenges in preserving traditional pragmatic markers—such as indirect requests and culturally laden cues—in the rapid, abbreviated context of digital messaging (Ibrahim, 2023). This can lead to ambiguities and misinterpretations, undermining effective communication. Moreover, the constant evolution of digital language trends raises concerns about the potential loss of culturally embedded pragmatic features. Addressing this issue is critical for understanding how digital media influences language evolution among urban youth and ensuring that communication remains clear and culturally resonant.

Objectives of the Study

  • To document the pragmatic features used in Nigerian Pidgin text messaging among urban youth.

  • To analyze how these features contribute to effective digital communication.

  • To propose strategies for preserving cultural pragmatic nuances online.

Research Questions

  • What are the key pragmatic features in Nigerian Pidgin mobile text messages?

  • How do these features facilitate or hinder communication among urban youth?

  • What strategies can enhance the clarity and cultural integrity of digital discourse?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it illuminates the pragmatic strategies employed in Nigerian Pidgin mobile text messaging among urban youth, offering insights into digital language evolution. The findings will benefit linguists, digital communication experts, and educators by providing guidelines to preserve cultural nuances and improve communicative clarity in online interactions (Ibrahim, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to Nigerian Pidgin usage in mobile text messaging among urban youth and does not extend to other forms of digital communication or different age groups.

Definitions of Terms

  • Pragmatic Features: Aspects of language use that convey meaning beyond literal content.

  • Nigerian Pidgin: A creole language widely used in informal communication across Nigeria.

  • Mobile Text Messaging: Communication via SMS or instant messaging platforms.
